Fan could name 'Rachel' foal

Horse Racing

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Racing fans will have the chance to name Rachel Alexandra's first foal, the Curlin colt born Jan. 22, in a contest her owners announced on Feb. 14.

"We cannot think of a better time than Valentine's Day to further share this experience with the fans by welcoming name suggestions for our precious bay colt with a bright white star, striking resemblance to his mother, and grand spirit," Barbara Banke, the widow of Stonestreet Farms founder Jess Jackson, said in a statement. "We are looking for a very special name for our special colt that reflects the vision and celebrates the memory of Jess."

Jackson, who campaigned both Rachel Alexandra and Curlin, died of cancer on April 21, 2011. Banke now operates Stonestreet and co-owns Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, in partnership with Harold McCormick.

Fans should e-mail name suggestions to VisitRachelA@stonestreetfarms.com by midnight Eastern on Sunday, Feb. 19. An e-mail form also is available at www.stonestreetfarms.com. The farm will accept one submission per household, and submissions should include the fan's name, mailing address, and contact phone number.

The person who submits the winning name will receive an overnight stay in the Stonestreet Farms guesthouse in Kentucky, a private farm tour, and a visit with Rachel Alexandra and her colt. If the final name selected reflects multiple submissions, the winner will be determined by drawing.
