Eve Giselle a popular winner of Endine

Horse Racing

Bean Counter Stables' ultra-consistent Eve Giselle notched her first graded stakes win and maintained her perfect record at Delaware Park simultaneously when taking the Grade 3, $151,050 Endine Stakes on Saturday. Pressing a hot pace the backside, the four-year-old lass inherited the lead with five-sixteenths to go and held off 20-1 chance Sassy City through the stretch while racing well off the inside. Under Javier Santiago, Eve Giselle prevailed in a time of 1:08 4/5 for six furlongs over a fast track and returned $4.40, $3.40 and $2.20 as the 6-5 favorite.

Eve Giselle was in prime stalking position a length off Cosmo Girl, who zipped through a quarter in :22 while racing between rivals. That speedster had only a head advantage over Ha Ha Tonka, who hugged the inside, and the outside stalking Eve Giselle. The eventual winner took over around the far turn and passed the half-mile mark in :44 4/5 while a head in front of Cosmo Girl, who soon beat a steady retreat. The only serious challenge from behind came from Sassy City, but the favorite was always holding her safe and finished one length ahead at the wire.

Sassy City was five lengths clear of 3-1 second choice Ms. Vanenzza for second. The latter prevailed in a three-way photo over Love That Dance and Ha Ha Tonka for the show. Class E Holiday, Mindy Sue and Cosmo Girl completed the order of finish. Scratched from the Endine were morning-line favorite Bronx City Girl and Tiz Rising.

Eve Giselle made a winning debut at Delaware in August 2009 by more than five lengths in a $50,000 maiden claimer, then captured a starter allowance at Monmouth to conclude her juvenile campaign. Her sophomore season was cut short after two races due to injury, but she fared well in winning an allowance at Oaklawn and running second by a length in the Martha Washington S. over the same track.

Returning to action on March 19 after 13-month absence, Eve Giselle took a second-level allowance at Oaklawn by a length, finished a close third in a third-level allowance the following month, then took the June 25 Sweet and Sassy S. at Delaware by 2 1/2 lengths after a two-month absence. Last time, Eve Giselle was bumped at the start and settled for second as the 1-5 favorite in the Daylily S. at Penn National. Her record now stands at 9-6-2-1, $282,800.

Bred in Florida by Terrapin Stables, Eve Giselle was produced by the winning Captiva Cat, a half-sister to stakes winner Adam's Time. This is the family of Grade 2 winners Aspen Rose and Kyle's Our Man as well as Grade 3 winners Running Tide and Holy Nova. Further back, this tribe produced multiple champion, Epsom Derby (Group 1) winner and noted sire Roberto.
