Napravnik has second surgery

Horse Racing

Jockey Rosie Napravnik had to undergo a second surgery July 8 on left arm, according to her publicist Kelly Wietsma of Equisponse. Napravnik broke her arm during a spill July 6 at Delaware Park.

"The original surgery was very complicated in that a plate that was put in to repair a break she sustained four years ago had to be removed and replaced with a larger plate," reported Wietsma on Facebook. "It was a very difficult procedure and as a result there was a great deal of swelling, which caused numbness and tingling in her fingers."

The second surgery reportedly lasted three hours, and the doctors used a vacuum drainage tube to help alleviate fluids and reduce swelling. Napravnik, 23, is at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del.

"Although she's in quite a bit of pain she is feeling relief from the surgery and she's resting comfortably," Wietsma said. Napravnik's recovery time has been estimated at two to three months.
Napravnik was riding Naseeb, a 4-year-old daughter of Belong to Me, who is owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by Dale Capuano. The filly, the 5-2 second choice in the race, broke down about a quarter-mile into the five-furlong race on the turf. She suffered a broken bone between her shoulder and elbow and was euthanized.
