Texas Red off Derby trail

Horse Racing

Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red has been taken off the trail to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.

Erich Brehm, who owns the Afleet Alex colt along with Wayne Detmar, Lee Michaels, Keith Desormeaux, and Dr. Gene Voss, said, "We do not have adequate time to prepare Texas Red for a prep race that he would need to get in condition for, and attain adequate points for, a Derby start. We look forward to bringing him back to the races when he is ready to compete again at the highest levels."

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings out of the Jeune Homme mare Ramatuelle, Texas Red was among the early favorites for this year's Derby after his Breeders' Cup triumph but has been plagued by foot problems throughout early 2015

Trained by Desormeaux, Texas Red stunned the Juvenile at odds of 13-1 by powering from the back of the pack and scoring by 6 1/2 lengths. He has raced once this season, finishing second a neck behind Lord Nelson in the San Vicente Stakes. He broke his maiden at Del Mar last second and ran third behind 2-year-old champion male American Pharoah in the Frontrunner Stakes.

Following a month of recuperation from a foot abscess and aqua therapy, Texas Red worked four furlongs in :51 2/5 easily March 14 at Santa Anita Park.
