Secret Circle gets first 3yo test

Horse Racing

ARCADIA, Calif. – Secret Circle's career may change after Saturday's $100,000 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita.

The unbeaten winner of three races, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint at Churchill Downs in November, Secret Circle makes his first start at a mile in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds. A brilliant sprinter, he must prove that he is not a one-dimensional colt and can carry that enthusiasm around two turns.

"It will be interesting," trainer Bob Baffert said. "I think the jury is still out on the turn turns."

Baffert has plans for Secret Circle, regardless of the outcome of Saturday's race. A win, or even a game finish, would lead to more races at distances. A disappointing performance would put an end to such an idea.

"This is a good spot to try him," Baffert said. "If he doesn't do well, I'll keep him at one turn. If he does do well, we can ship him out of town."
