'Landing' wins in Woodbine opener

Horse Racing

ETOBICOKE, Ontario -- Grazettes Landing came from a stalking position under Patrick Husbands to land his first stakes Friday in the $102,400 Debut, the opening-day feature of the 167-day Woodbine meet.

Grazettes Landing ($11) ran four wide on the turn in the five-furlong dash, as Paso Doble and Bold Nurse dueled through an opening quarter in 21.99 seconds.

Grazettes Landing hit the front just inside the eighth pole, and then coasted home on top by a length over a closing Don's Folly, who nailed Paso Doble on the wire for second. Favored Drunken Love finished sixth in the 11-horse field of Ontario-sired runners.

Grazettes Landing, trained by Mark Casse for Melnyk Racing Stable, covered the distance in 56.99 seconds, which was .58 of a second off the track record. First money of $60,000 boosted his bankroll to $361,283.
