Grade 2 winner St Trinians, whose shining moment was when she gave Zenyatta a scare in the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap in 2010, has been retired from racing, trainer Mike Mitchell said Tuesday.
St Trinians won eight races and $440,758 from 19 starts, including Grade 2 victories in the Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita in 2010 and Milady Handicap at Hollywood Park in 2011. She won the restricted Adoration Stakes in her most recent start Sept. 4 at Del Mar and was aiming toward the Grade 1 Spinster on Oct. 9 at Keeneland. But after a five-furlong workout Sept. 24, the 6-year-old mare showed signs of wear that made retirement the best option. "She showed up with some ankle fluid, and it's the same ankle I've had trouble with in the past," Mitchell said. Mitchell said St Trinians would be sold this at Keeneland this fall. St Trinians began her career in England, and was purchased privately by bloodstock agent Jamie Lloyd for owners Dan Capen and Laura Chavers after winning 3 of 7, all on minor tracks there. An English-bred daughter of Piccolo, she was not expensive. Her owners had invested only $85,000 by the time she made her U.S. debut in March 2009. St Trinians won her first four U.S. starts before finishing sixth in the Santa Anita Handicap in 2010. Three months later, she made the lead in midstretch of the Vanity and appeared on her way to handing Zenyatta her first defeat. It did not happen; Zenyatta surged late and won by a half-length. "I only have one picture on my wall of me getting beat," Mitchell said. "That was the race, when Zenyatta beat her."
