LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Adena Springs stallion Awesome Again underwent colic surgery early Tuesday morning at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, the farm has revealed.

"Awesome Again had an exploratory celiotomy the morning of Sept. 13, 2011, for a strangulating lipoma [fatty tumor] of the small colon," attending surgeon Dr. Alan Ruggles said of the 17-year-old Awesome Again. "At this time, his prognosis is considered favorable barring further complications, He has recovered from general anesthesia and is resting comfortably in his stall."

A homebred for Adena owner Frank Stronach, Awesome Again won the 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic and is the sire of 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, among other champions and 11 Grade 1 winners. He also is the top sire of Breeders' Cup winners.

Awesome Again stood at Adena Springs in Paris, Ky., for a $50,000 advertised fee this year.

Awesome Again, a son of Deputy Minister, is out of the Blushing Groom winner Primal Force and is a half-brother to 2000 champion 2-year-old and Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Macho Uno. Primal Force was named Broodmare of the Year in 2000.
