Rodman, runner up to Tizway in the Metropolitan Handicap, heads the six-horse field in the Grade 2, $300,000 Suburban Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park.
The top event of the holiday weekend at Belmont Park came up light in numbers and quality. This is an excellent chance for Rodman to shine in his fourth start since missing the entire 2010 season with a foot injury and a bout of colic. He breaks from the rail with Javier Castellano aboard for trainer Mike Hushion following the race of his life. He came charging from far back in the Met Mile at 36-1, earning a personal-best 108 Beyer Speed Figure. "When they run that kind of a Beyer, 'bouncing' is always a concern," Hushion said. "It was a very good effort. There were a couple of jumps where it looked as if he was going to get to the winner, but he never came back." Colizeo and Icabad Crane, second and third in the Schaeffer Memorial on the Preakness undercard, will contest the Suburban as will Convocation, Flat Out, and Hymn Book. The Grade 2, $150,000 Dwyer for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles is the supporting event Saturday. Adios Charlie, winner of the Grade 2 Jerome at Aqueduct in April, missed by a head in his latest effort, the Grade 2 Peter Pan, for trainer and co-owner Stanley Hough. Harlan's Hello wheels back on relatively short rest, following a distant fourth to Pants On Fire two weeks ago in the Grade 3 Pegasus at Monmouth Park. Malibu Glow, Dominus, Rocking Out, Tech Fall, and Cool Blue Red Hot complete the Dwyer field. Sunday features a trio of $150,000 stakes -- the Bed o' Roses for filly and mare sprinters and a pair of 2-year-old events at six furlongs, the Futurity and the Matron for fillies. Stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes expects Hilda's Passion and Curlina, the 1-2 finishers in the Grade 2 Vagrancy here June 4, to renew that rivalry in the Bed o' Roses. Hilda's Passion is 3-2-0 in five graded stakes this year for trainer Todd Pletcher. The expected lineup includes Christine Daae, Spa City Princess, and Tamarind Hall. In Sunday's 2-year-old action, the Futurity probables include Getupwiththesun, Tarpy's Goal, and Team Six. Threeanddonedan will be making his second stakes appearance, having run fourth in the Victoria over Woodbine's artificial surface. As in the Futurity, the Matron runners are short on experience at this early stage of their careers. The five fillies on the likely list are all stepping up following maiden wins: Defy Gravity, Hook It Up, Millionreasonswhy, Pure Whim's Gem, and Say A Novena. The holiday weekend concludes Monday with the Grade 1, $250,000 Prioress for 3-year-old fillies going six furlongs. Quantum Miss will put a three-race winning streak on the line for trainer Tony Dutrow. The run began with the Grade 3 Cicada at Aqueduct in March. Her latest triumph was a 12-length score against statebreds at Penn National. Pomeroys Pistol also is a graded stakes winner, having taken the Grade 2 Forward Gal at Gulfstream Park for owner-trainer-breeder Amy Tarrant. Most recently, Pomeroys Pistol was a decisive winner of the Just Smashing Stakes at Monmouth Park. Other expected runners include Alienation, Jostle winner Bold Affair, Orientatious, and Roman Treasure.
