ARCADIA, Calif. -- Clubhouse Ride, among the top 3-year-olds in California, is off the Kentucky Derby trail, trainer Craig Lewis announced Monday morning at Santa Anita.

Lewis said Clubhouse Ride, a son of Candy Ride, has a hairline fracture of his right ankle that will require 45 days off.

"It's miniscule and he will recover," Lewis said. "That's the good news. The disappointment is I believe he is a true mile-and-a-quarter horse."

Before the setback, Clubhouse Ride was one of California's most durable 3-year-olds. He raced 11 times, won twice, and earned $210,000 in graded races that virtually guaranteed he could have made it into the Kentucky Derby field.

In his most recent start, Clubhouse Ride finished second in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on Jan. 15 at Santa Anita. He previously finished third in the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity, and third in the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot.

Owned by Six-S Racing Stable and Nikolas Petralia, Clubhouse Ride was purchased for $22,000 at a January 2010 sale at Barretts, and has earned $317,550 overall from his 11 starts. "Fortunately, the horse should fully recover," Lewis said. "He can come back in a couple months and be a very good horse."

Clubhouse Ride is the second top horse in California to recently be sidelined. Tapizar, who defeated Clubhouse Ride on Jan. 15 in the Sham, has been sidelined with a bone chip in a knee.
