A horse trained by Rick Dutrow has been disqualified from a stakes victory at Laurel Park because he was administrated a medication within two hours of the race, a violation of Maryland racing rules.
In addition to disqualifying King and Crusader from his Dec. 17 win in the Maryland Juvenile Championship, stewards also levied a $500 fine against Dutrow and fined veterinarian Brian Delp $1,000. Owned by James A. Riccio, King and Crusader posted a 16-1 upset in the $75,000 race in his stakes debut. Following the race, the trainers of the second-through-fourth-place finishers filed protests with stewards, claiming that the victory should be voided because King and Crusader was not eligible for the race as a result of the late medication administration. The trainers who filed the protests were John J. Robb, Robin Graham and Leo Nechamkin II. The stewards' ruling states that during a hearing neither Dutrow nor Delp disputed that the horse was given the medication within two hours of the race. As a result of the ruling, Glib, trained by Robb, was declared the winner of the Maryland Juvenile Championship, followed by Jack's in the Deck, and Alongcamethedevil. According to The Baltimore Sun, King and Crusader was administered the medication too close to race time because the horse was a late arrival from Dutrow's New York-based stable due to traffic congestion. The Sun said Riccio is "looking into an appeal" of the ruling.
