SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Two years after winning the Grade 1 Alabama with the fleet-footed filly Careless Jewel, owners Donna and Vern Dubinksy and trainer Josie Carroll have returned to Saratoga with Inglorious to take another shot at the prestigious race for 3-year-old fillies.
Coming off a victory against males in the Queen's Plate at Woodbine on June 26, Inglorious will try to prove she's more than a synthetic-surface specialist when she takes on Grade 1 winners It's Tricky and Plum Pretty and Grade 2 winners St. John's River and Royal Delta in the 131st running of the Alabama. Pinch Pie, a turf specialist also was entered, but is not definite to run, according to her trainer, Tony Dutrow. Inglorious, a daughter of Hennessy, is 5 for 5 at Woodbine, which has a Polytrack surface. In two starts on dirt, Inglorious finished second in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra and fourth in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks. Carroll was pleased with how Inglorious ran in the Rachel Alexandra her first start as a 3-year-old and felt there was a legitimate reason her filly didn't run any better in the Fair Grounds Oaks. "I just thought there was a track bias on that day; it was speed-favoring, and we sat a little closer than we're accustomed to and took her out of her game," Carroll said. Following the Fair Grounds Oaks, Inglorious returned to Woodbine, where she won a restricted stakes at 1 1/16 miles, the Woodbine Oaks at 1 1/8 miles and the Queen's Plate against males at 1 1/4 miles, making her the only member of this field to have won at the Alabama distance. "At least you know your filly will go a mile and a quarter," Carroll said. "The others may as well, but at least we're going in knowing she's been over that distance and successfully." Inglorious will break from post 6 under Luis Contreras, who is 3 for 3 aboard the filly. It's Tricky defeated Plum Pretty by three-quarters of a length in the Coaching Club American Oaks here July 24. It's Tricky will break from post 4, one slot outside Plum Pretty. It's Tricky, who also won the Grade 1 Acorn, will seek to become the first horse male or female this year to win three Grade 1 races in North America. She had an enthusiastic 1 1/2-mile gallop over the synthetic surface at Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin training center, formerly known as the Greentree property, behind the main-track stabling areas. St. John's River will seek to become the fourth consecutive Delaware Oaks winner to win the Alabama. St. John's River, who finished second in the Fair Grounds Oaks and Kentucky Oaks, will break from post 5 under Robby Albarado. The Alabama will go as race 10 on an 11-race card and be shown live on NBC during a one-hour telecast beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern.
