SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Lookin At Lucky, who scored a powerful victory in the Haskell Invitational on Sunday, is still at Monmouth Park, recovering from a minor illness from which he is improving, trainer Bob Baffert said Wednesday morning at Saratoga.
"He's going to be there for a while," Baffert said. "We had to give him penicillin. So he can't run for at least 30 days." That timetable removes Lookin At Lucky from consideration for the Travers Stakes on Aug. 28, though Baffert never gave that race real serious thought. The $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 25 at Philadelphia Park remains the most likely next race for Lookin At Lucky. "Thank God I didn't ship him up here right away, or he would have headed right back out to New Bolton," Baffert said, referring to the respected veterinary clinic in Pennsylvania. Baffert said Lookin At Lucky's temperature reached 102 degrees on Tuesday, when he was scheduled to be flown to Del Mar. Normal for a horse is about 100 degrees. Lookin At Lucky was last year's champion 2-year-old male. He is the pro-tem leader of the 3-year-old division this year, with the Haskell his second consecutive victory, following the Preakness Stakes. He also won the Rebel in his first start of the year.
