DEL MAR, Calif. -- Gozzip Girl's first start in California in more than a year in Sunday's $250,000 John Mabee Stakes at Del Mar will be a starting-over point in the career of the 4-year-old filly.
The Grade 2 Mabee will be her first start for Calder-based trainer Marty Wolfson. Gozzip Girl was previously trained by Tom Albertrani, who guided her to 5 wins in 12 starts and four stakes wins. Wolfson has an established relationship with Gozzip Girl's owner, Farnsworth Stable, and picked up the filly after she finished fourth as the favorite in the Grade 3 Robert Dick Memorial Handicap at Delaware Park on July 17. By sending Gozzip Girl to California, Wolfson is hoping the filly can end a four-race losing streak by racing over a firm turf course in cooler temperatures. "I think going out there will be better for her," he said by phone from Florida on Thursday. "I think the heat got to her back East. "I think she's better on firm turf. She had a couple of races on yielding turf and I don't know if she liked those courses." Gozzip Girl's biggest win came in the Grade 1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park last July, her most recent win. This year has been tough. Gozzip Girl was well-regarded in the Grade 2 New York Stakes at Belmont Park on June 19, but stumbled at the start, unseating jockey Ramon Dominguez. In the Robert Dick Memorial, she was within a length at the eighth pole but faded from contention in the final furlong in a race over 1 3/8 miles on turf. The Mabee Stakes is run over 1 1/8 miles on turf, a distance over which Gozzip Girl won stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Gulfstream Park and Belmont Park in the spring of 2009. In the Mabee, Gozzip Girl is part of a field of eight that includes the 2010 stakes winners Gotta Have Her, Lilly Fa Pootz, Turning Top and Wasted Tears. Spring Style, fourth behind Zenyatta in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Stakes last Saturday, makes a quick turnaround. She was supplemented to the Mabee for $2,500 on Thursday. Turning Top is not a certain starter. The winner of the Grade 3 Beverly Hills Handicap at Hollywood Park in June for owner Michael Tabor, Turning Top could be sent to Arlington Park for the $750,000 Beverly D Stakes on Aug. 21, trainer Simon Callaghan said. "I'd say it's about 50-50," he said.
