Putting a three-race win streak on the line, Quantum Miss takes on five other sophomore filly sprinters all hoping to create some fireworks in Monday's 64th running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Prioress Stakes, the Independence Day feature at Belmont Park.
Trained by Tony Dutrow, the gray miss launched her current win streak when taking the Grade 3 Cicada Stakes at Aqueduct on March 19. She followed with a 1 1/2-length score in in the overnight Trevose S. at Parx Racing on April 19 and most recently was a front-running, 12-length winner of the restricted Wonders Delight Stakes at Penn National, zipping the six furlongs in 1:08.63. "I can't see her going into any race better than she went into her last at Penn National," Dutrow said. "I'm very happy with the way she is now. There's a lot to gain in the Prioress if she's able to run well. Of course, the quality of the horses she'll meet here are better than those at Penn National." Among those she'll face on Monday is the Prioress 5-2 morning line favorite, Roman Treasure, who has won three of her five starts. Fourth behind Quantum Miss in the Cicada, the dark bay lass returned from a two-month layoff to win a first-level allowance at Parx on May 15, and a month later turned in what trainer Mike Hushion called a "brilliant" front-running effort to win the Miss Royal overnight stakes at Belmont on June 16, covering the six furlongs in 1:08.99. Ramon Dominguez will ride Roman Treasure, while Jeremy Rose gets the call on Quantum Miss, who drew post position 4 as the co-second choice at 3-1 on the morning line. Also at 3-1 is the Bob Baffert-trained Alienation, who ran second in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes and Adirondack Stakes (Grade 2) during Saratoga last year. She closed out her juvenile campaign with a sixth in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf at Hollywood Park, and in her lone start of 2011 was an eye-catching 7 3/4-length allowance winner back at that California venue on June 3. "She's doing great," said Baffert's New York assistant, Tonja Terranova, who oversaw Alienation's :47 half-mile work Wednesday morning. "She's grown a lot since we've seen her last summer. And Bob never sends horses here if they're not ready to run." Trainer Todd Pletcher is hoping that turning back from a mile in the Prioress will see Her Smile return to the winner's circle. Most recently a distant third in the Acorn Stakes (Grade 1), the dark bay miss ran 11th in the Kentucky Oaks. Her last race sprinting resulted in a 1 1/2-length victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Donna Freyer Stakes at Parx Racing to conclude her two-year-old season. "She's doing well," assistant trainer Jonathan Thomas said. "We had been taking a look at this spot for her." Pomeroy's Pistol was an early contender for the Kentucky Oaks following her upset win in the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park, but owner/trainer Amy Tarrant opted to bypass that nine-furlong contest after her bay charge ran a distant third in the one-mile Davona Dale Stakes. The bay filly was instead given a couple months off and brought back in the seven-furlong Eight Belles Stakes on the Oaks undercard, where she finished sixth. Pomeroys Pistol obviously needed that freshener because she drew off by 4 1/2 lengths in the Just Smashing S. at Monmouth Park on June 11. Rounding out the field is Our Year, who broke her maiden by 3 3/4 lengths at Gulfstream Park in April prior to a 5 3/4-length optional claiming victory last out at Monmouth Park.
