Rapid Redux equaled Citation's modern American record for wins in one year when he captured his 19th victory of 2011 in the sixth race at Laurel Park on Tuesday afternoon. Making the lead at the start under J.D. Acosta, Rapid Redux set a solid tempo while maintaining a clear lead in a 1 1/16-mile race for $5,000 starter-allowance horses. Acosta asked for run at the top of the Laurel stretch and Rapid Redux responded, opening up a lead of about three lengths at the stretch call. But whether from fatigue or boredom, Rapid Redux lost his momentum in the final half-furlong, and Awesome Rhythm steadily gained ground. Acosta, feeling the late challenge, went back to a right-handed whip after having hand-ridden Rapid Redux for a half-furlong or so, dropping his stick just before the finish, but Rapid Redux held clear his rival. The victory was Rapid Redux's 21st in a row, moving him two victories ahead of the previous modern North American record-holders for consecutive wins, Zenyatta and Peppers Pride. Rapid Redux, trained by David Wells for owner Robert Cole, paid $2.60 to win and was timed in 1:45.08 on a fast dirt track. No Brakes, the second betting choice, finished third.
