SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Tizway can't be considered just a miler anymore. What he might be now is the best older male horse in the country.
Nearly ten weeks after winning the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, Tizway soundly defeated a good group of older male horses by three lengths in Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney Invitational Handicap at Saratoga. As a Win and You're In race, the victory earned him a guaranteed berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Flat Out, the Suburban winner, rallied for second, 3 1/2 lengths clear of Giant Oak, the Donn Handicap winner who nosed out Friend Or Foe for third. They were followed in the order of finish by Headache, Mission Impazible, Rail Trip, Rodman, Apart, Duke of Mischief, and Morning Line. Tizway became the first Met Mile winner to come back and win the Whitney in the same year since In Excess did it in 1991. It was the seventh victory from 20 career starts for Tizway and pushed his career earnings to $1,359,274. Jockey Rajiv Maragh hustled Tizway away from the gate and assumed a stalking position while three wide behind Friend Or Foe and Morning Line, who were side by side through fractions of 24.31 seconds, 49.11 and 1:13.85. Approaching the five-sixteenths pole, Tizway took over and was never headed from there, bounding home a decisive winner. Tizway covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.43 and returned $10.20 as the 4-1 favorite. Tizway is owned by William Clifton and trained by James Bond, who won this race in 1997 with Will's Way.
