The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, Gang aft agley, -- Robert Burns

If ever Burns' words rang true for me it is with my picks for this years Kentucky Derby winner. My favorite Eskendereya is gone. Endorsement is out. While post position one has launched twelve Kentucky Derby winners, it looks like a challenge for Lookn at Lucky. Sidney's Candy--one of my sentimental favorites--drew post position twenty. Only two horses have ever won from that far out (Big Brown in 2008 and Clyde Van Dusen in 1929).

Alas, the chaos doesn't stop with sidelined horses and post positions that at the very least will make many roll their eyes. Refusing not to have some influence on the Derby, it appears that Mother Nature intends to visit Louisville with potentially ferocious storms on the first Saturday in May.

If you've been playing the Derby for a while you've probably come to realize that all of the above is status quo for the America's greatest horse race. Every year the unexpected and unwanted adds color and unpredictability and excitement to the race, which is why I bet the Derby just for fun. The only aspects of the race that are sure is that it will be run, people will sing Ole Kentucky Home with tears in their eyes, mint juleps will flow like Niagara Falls, and there will be a new Derby Champion.

In the end I can't bet against Lookn At Lucky. He's looking too good, and has the experience to handle this field. That said, he'll be bet too low for me to put any money on him alone, so I'll box him with Ice Box and Stately Victor. I'll box Ice Box and Stately Victor as well. If one of my bets wins I'll gloat and deceive myself into thinking I'm a handicapping genius. If I lose I'll use it as an excuse to have another Julep. In the end I win either way.

Other Wins I Wouldn't Mind Seeing:

While I'm not betting the horses below, I wouldn't mind losing to them. I may not go to the window on sentimentality, but I can't help but have some entries that appeal to me emotionally. Call me soft, but if any of the horses below won I'd have a smile on my face.

Super Saver captained by "Sneaky C" Borel would be great win. What can I say, I'm a big Borel fan. In fact I like his style so much I decided to give him the nickname "Sneaky C".

Devil May Care with John Velazquez aboard would be great for the sport. It's a thrill anytime a filly wins the Kentucky Derby.

Sidney's Candy steered by Joe Talamo would confirm that miracles are still possible.
