Big Daddy No Bucks' 135th Preakness Stakes Short List as of 5-15-2010

With Icebox sitting this one out and the anything but lucky team of Garrett Gomez and Lookin At Lucky broken up, I'm putting Baffert's beleaguered super horse from the west back on top. Super Saver and Paddy O'prado have certainly earned their place on the list of possible winners. Both horses should benefit greatly from having the cagey Cajun jockeys Calvin Borel and Kent Desormeaux providing steerage. Caracortado is my long shot, which may be close to a favorite by post time.
A horse that could really upset my plans are Dublin. Dublin always shows up in the right place to win, but for some reason the trigger never gets pulled. Gomez is a master at finishing a race, so he may be exactly what Dublin needs.

Desormeaux did give Summer Bird the perfect ride on Saturday. I'm not a fan of his, toghuh. I think he's one of those jockeys who will ride well when he thinks he has a chance to win, but who gives less than 100% effort when he's riding for low-profile connections or when he thinks third- or fourth-place money isn't enough. Case in point: we had a pretty good NY-bred filly, Fighting Speedy, in the Iroquois Handicap the top race for NY-bred female sprinters a couple of years ago, and switched to Desormeaux from Pablo Fragoso, who'd ridden the filly to stakes placings earlier in the season. Kent just completely wrapped up on our horse, apparently deciding that, if he couldn't do better than third, he wasn't going to try at all. A big disappointment.
