If you're looking to find a Derby winner in the Spiral Stakes, you're time would probably be better spent napping or watching preseason baseball or damn near doing anything other than watching the 2013 Turfway Spiral Stakes. However, if you're looking to make a little money, there's potentially a few good bets in this race.

Balance the Books and Uncaptured are likely to go off as favorites and, while talented, both have problems that make me think they are very vulnerable. Both horses have are coming off long layoffs from injuries and Balance the Books has never run on synthetic before. This is Uncaptured's first race since his December 2012 win in a very slow Kentucky Jockey Club. While I'll use they two, it will only be in exotics.

The 9-2 Pletcher/Valazquez entry Capo Bastone just doesn't excite me. He's coming off a very slow race and boy does he ever have a difficult post position. I can't see him winning without some phenomenal improvement over his last start.

So what horses have a shot at winning while carrying good odds into the race? I'm looking at Mac the Man, My Name Is Michael, and General Election. Mac the Man is a local horse that seems to take to Turfway and looks like he's ready for the distance. This race may be made for My Name Is Michael. He's back on synthetic, has the 35% winning trainer/jockey combo of Mott and Rosario and isn't facing much speed. General Election has already beaten a couple of horses in this field and has a strong finishing kick.

Other horses I may work into bets are For Greater Glory and Fear the Kitten. For Greater Glory has never been off the board which makes him a good play for exotics. As for Fear the Kitten, every time I leave Rosie Napravnik out of a race she makes the board.
