Winner of the G2 Holy Bull, Upstart is a Richard Violette trained colt who also placed in the G2 Fountain of Youth and the G1 Florida Derby. After missing some time due to a fever, Upstart is back to training for the Derby and his trainer likes what he sees.
"All in all, wow," Violette said. "He did things so easily. He wouldn't pull up on the backside. He galloped out three-quarters in 14 [seconds], and that was under orders for the rider on the walkie-talkie to ease him up. I'm not sure if we could have done things any differently or any better. He's just a good horse, and we try not to get in his way."
Upstart has stayed in the mix against solid young talent and could be an easy pick to finish in the money. Stay tuned for our bets on May 1st!
