Union Rags is a Dixie Union and Tempo colt. He's had a dominating young career with 4 wins, a place, and a show in six career starts - never finishing out of the money. His most recent race, the Florida Derby, saw him finish a disappointing third despite being the heavy favorite. He ran a good race but was never able to get the break away he needed to close with a win. The early consensus is that he'll be the favorite on May 5th.
Union Rags may actually be the best horse in the Kentucky Derby crop this year. Despite that, the Florida Derby exposed a weakness, even if it is one shared by all horses - the early box. That won't get any easier in a field of 20. His early career and speed has been so dominating I don't see how you get away from putting him in your bet. It's not uncommon for a champion to experience a dip right before a big win. The odds will be my final determining factor but I expect to put some money on Union Rags in the Derby.
