Orb is a Malibu Moon and Lady Liberty colt. He won the Fountain of Youth (G2) and the Florida Derby (G1) over some very good Derby competition. Joel Rosario returns to ride Orb in the Derby - he was aboard him for his first five starts, but was unable to take the mount in the Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby due to prior calls. He trained at Payson Park before heading to Churchill Downs and impressed trainer Shug McGaughey.
"I'm really excited. I hope I stay excited and don't get nervous, but I know that's not going to happen. I had a lot of anticipation about today to get this over with in the right way. We got a good bottom work into him. We'll sharpen him up over there," McGaughey said. "But I am excited about the opportunity. If everything goes right [...], I'll really get excited about maybe having a chance to win."
Orb is another one at the top of our shortlist. We had a commanding victory in the Florida Derby against some tough competition. A field of 20 can change things fast, but a good post position will set Orb up nicely for a win.
