Giant Oak rallied from off the pace with a wide stretch run and passed a trio of horses late to post a two-length victory in the Grade 1 $500,000 Donn Handicap Feb. 5 at Gulfstream Park.
Little Mike and Twilight Meteor each wired their respective fields at big odds last out, but neither figures to be favored for the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (Grade 1) Feb. 5 when a well-balanced lineup of eight goes to post.
How strong is the field for the Donn Handicap? Included among the nine starters is a horse that enters off a win in a Breeders' Cup race, another that bagged the Clark Handicap last out, and a third that set a track record in his season debut.
Former claimer Calibrachoa became a graded stakes winner and remained unbeaten in two starts for owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher when he held off Independence War by a half-length in the Grade 3, $98,000 Toboggan Stakes Jan. 22 at Aqueduct.
Lookin At Lucky became the first horse since Spectacular Bid to be named champion 2-year-old male and 3-year-old male.
