Two New York-breds stood out in a six-horse field heading into the $250,000 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack, and those two put on quite a show while developing a rivalry that could continue on the road to the Kentucky Derby.
Honors Stable Corporation's Wildcat Red turned in a sparkling performance Feb. 1 at Gulfstream Park, taking the $200,000 Hutcheson Stakes over eight other 3-year-olds in dominant fashion. The Feb. 22 Fountain of Youth will be his next target.
David Heerensperger and Jose Nelson's Winning Prize blew by a loose-on-the-lead Regally Ready and stormed clear in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,500 Arcadia Stakes at Santa Anita.
After getting a quick jump out of the gate, Fashion Plate went wire-to-wire and held off tenacious even-money favorite Streaming for a game victory in the $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes Feb. 1 at Santa Anita Park.
WinStar Farm LLC and Twin Creeks Racing Stables LLC's Vinceremos pulled off the upset by a nose in Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Sam F. Davis for three-year-olds at Tampa Bay Downs. Off as the 12-1 fifth choice, the colt paid $26.80 for the score.
The 1-2 favorite Salto appeared well on his way to an overdue first stakes victory in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Tampa Bay Stakes, only to have the 14-1 Guys Reward swoop fast and late to snatch the spoils.
Candyman E rallied to catch pacesetter Dads Caps in deep stretch and posted his first graded stakes win in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Toboggan at Aqueduct.
